Opening the Gates to Mercado Tlacolula: An
Introduction to a Cultural Kaleidoscope
If you’ve read this blog from the beginning you know I am fanatical
about markets. From London to Toronto and now Mexico. It feels like I travel
the world just to find the most interesting stalls and ingenious handmade
crafters there are. So of course when a good friend of mine told me he knew a
spot that wasn’t like the other tourism hotspots I found in Mexico City , I had
to take him up on the offer.
Stepping into Mercado Tlacolula is a plunge into sensory
delight. Every Sunday, the town of Tlacolula becomes a bustling canvas brimming
with vibrant textiles, fragrant spices, and the melodies of Oaxaca's rich
heritage. This market, one of the oldest and largest in the region, is where
traditional indigenous life merges with the modern hustle and bustle. Visitors
witness a living, breathing cultural tapestry: artisans craft pottery as their
ancestors did, while fruit vendors tout exotic produce under colourful awnings.
Mercado Tlacolula isn't merely a market; it's a spirited celebration of life. I
truly can’t overstate how incredible this experience was. Something I will
never forget and hopefully return to one day.
History Unveiled: The Roots and Relevance of Mercado
Tlacolula
Positioned just 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca City lies Tlacolula,
a small town caught between tourist destinations (Oaxaca City, Hierve de Agua, Cerro
Zempoaltepetl, etc.) has watched the world fly by as indigenous cultures and
traditions have stood steadfast against the rushing tides of modernity and
consumerism.
Welcome to Mercado Tlacolula, a bustling market with roots
as deep as the Zapotec civilisation (civilisation that thrived for 2,500 years
in the Oaxaca valleys). It has been a central hub for social and economic
exchange for centuries, reflecting the vibrant fusion of indigenous traditions
and Spanish influences.
Established on Sundays, becoming a pivotal day for
local commerce. The day we visited of course.
The market was officially recognised in the 16th century,
but its origins are far more ancient.
It serves as a living museum, displaying Oaxaca's rich
cultural tapestry through crafts, textiles, and cuisine.
Tlacolula connects communities; farmers, artisans, and shoppers come together, strengthening cultural ties.
Navigating the Stalls: A Guide to the Sights and
Sounds of the Market
As visitors weave through Mercado Tlacolula's maze-like
setup, a collage of aromas, colours, and sounds envelopes them. Here's what to
savour:
The Aromas: Fragrant spices mix with the smoky scent
of cooking meat, luring foodies to street food vendors.
The Colours: Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables
create a vivid tableau, begging to be photographed. Rojos and Verdes brighter
than the rainbow beckon each passerby, promising the juiciest fruit out there.
The Textiles: Handwoven fabrics display intricate
designs, each pattern telling a story of culture and community.
The Chatter: The buzz of negotiation in a symphony of
Spanish and indigenous languages adds a lively soundtrack. (A lot of people in
this region speak Spanish as a second language, a testament to the and example
of the preservation of indigenous cultures in Oaxaca).
Local Crafts: Wooden toys clack and ceramic wares
glint, showcasing the artisans’ skills.
Embrace this sensory journey, engaging with stallholders and savouring the market's pulsating rhythm.
A Feast for the Senses: Exploring the Gastronomic
Delights of Tlacolula
Upon entering Mercado Tlacolula, visitors are greeted with
piles of fresh produce; tomatoes and tomatillos emitting a verdant promise of
zesty salsas. Stalls laden with Oaxacan cheese ('quesillo'), crumbling beneath
a casual touch, beckon cheese aficionados. Smoke dances from grills where
'tlayudas'—large, crisp tortillas—are topped with rich, smoky beans and
succulent meats. Amidst the bustling aisles, 'chapulines', or grasshoppers,
offer a crunchy surprise, seasoned to spicy perfection. Artisans pour 'mezcal'
with a spirit of generosity, its smoky notes pairing perfectly with the unique
fare. Each bite, sip, and savour at Mercado Tlacolula is not simply
nourishment, but a celebration of Oaxacan culture on the tongue. Each vendor
being incredibly friendly with free samples, allowing maximum enjoyment from a
no cost serving.
Threads of Tradition: Textiles and Handicrafts at the
Heart of Tlacolula
At Mercado Tlacolula, vibrant textiles spill from stalls
like a painter's palette come to life. Local artisans possess skills passed
down through generations, weaving not just fabric but stories and tradition
into their work. Vividly coloured Zapotec rugs lie alongside delicate
embroidery, each stitch narrates regional mythologies.
Hand-dyed clothes and bags flaunt patterns that carry
age-old motifs.
Diverse handicrafts showcase meticulous beadwork and
pottery, each piece unique.
Intricate alebrijes (whimsical carved wood creatures)
provide a kaleidoscope of fantasy.
For visitors, these crafts offer a tangible
connection to Oaxaca's rich cultural tapestry especially with every vendor
willing to bargain a brilliant price.
Sundays at the Market: The Weekly Fiesta that
Transforms Tlacolula
Every Sunday, Mercado Tlacolula bursts into a festive spree
of colour, culture, and commerce. It's the day locals and visitors alike mark
impatiently on their calendars (just like my good friend who couldn’t wait to
get us there). As the first sunbeams touch the cobblestone streets, the market
swells with vendors setting up their multicoloured stalls (this moment felt
like something out of a Studio Ghibli movie, truly full of fantasy flare).
Fresh produce glistens under the sun while traditional Oaxacan textiles are
meticulously displayed, creating a mosaic of colour and shading throughout the
streets.
Aromas of barbacoa and tlayudas mingle in the air.
Mariachi tunes blend with friendly haggling buzz.
Handcrafted pottery and woven baskets tempt those
passing by.
The Church, standing like a sentinel in the central
courtyard. One of the key reasons Sundays flourish in Tlacolula. People flow in
and out of the regally decorated atrium, wishing well and sharing prayers for each
other.
Children dart through the crowds, laughter echoing off the
walls, as parents negotiate the best deals. The weekly transformation infuses
Tlacolula with a lively spirit, making Sundays an unforgettable experience
marked by tradition, community, and the joy of a fiesta.
Local Libations: Sampling the Indigenous Drinks of
Oaxaca - Cafe de Olla
Now this was a MASSIVE surprise to me. As somebody who
prides themselves on a comprehensive coffee command. I was introduced to a
brand new version of my caffeinated favourite.
Visitors to Mercado Tlacolula cannot miss the comforting
allure of Cafe de Olla. This traditional Mexican coffee is a unique
experience and one that blew me away. Steeped in rural heritage, it's prepared
in a clay pot, which imbues a deep earthy flavour. Oaxacan vendors add their
local twist with a raw cane sugar (Piloncillo) and cinnamon, creating a sweet
and spiced aroma that drifts enticingly through the market aisles.
Sipping Caffe de Olla gives a warm, energetic buzz, perfect
for perusing the vibrant crafts and produce on offer. It's not just a drink;
it's a sip of Oaxaca's cultural essence and something I shall be fiending for
until I return.
Tales in Every Turn: Meeting the Vendors and Craftsmen
of Mercado Tlacolula
Wander through Mercado Tlacolula, and the stories unfold
with each stall. Here, indigenous vendors beam with passion, offering handmade
textiles. The air hums with a cacophony of haggling voices and the rhythmic
clack of weavers at their looms. A potter, hands coated in clay, showcases
earthenware pots whilst recounting the techniques passed down through
generations. Fruit sellers, surrounded by kaleidoscopes of fresh produce, share
recipes with eager food enthusiasts. Each stand is a microcosm, a personal
gallery where the crafters tale is as compelling as the wares they sell.
Mercado Tlacolula's Influence on Regional Tourism and
Economy
Mercado Tlacolula, a spirited embodiment of Oaxacan culture,
plays a pivotal role in boosting regional tourism. Each Sunday, a magnet for
visitors, the market's bountiful stalls showcase the area's rich heritage,
drawing curious travellers to Tlacolula de Matamoros.
Beyond the Buzz of the Market: Quieter Moments in
Tlacolula
Amidst the sensory overload of Mercado Tlacolula lie pockets
of tranquillity. If one wanders off the main thoroughfares, they might stumble
upon serene courtyards where local artisans quietly ply their trades. Here, the
fervor of bargaining voices gives way to the soft clinking of a sculptor's
chisel or the rhythmic whisper of a wanderers tale. Visitors can find older
residents seated on weathered benches, sharing stories beneath the shade of a
stoic tree, offering a glimpse of the unhurried side of Tlacolulan life.
Conserving Culture: The Future of Mercado Tlacolula
Influential in both the social and economic fabric of the
region, Mercado Tlacolula faces critical times. With the ever-increasing waves
of modernity, conservation efforts are pivotal. Authorities, alongside local
communities, are striving to preserve the market's unique character. Education
programmes aim to impart the significance of the market's traditions to the
youth. Moreover, the introduction of sustainable tourism practices helps
protect cultural heritage while fostering global appreciation. The future
vision? A harmonious balance where progress supports tradition, ensuring
Mercado Tlacolula continues to thrive as a beacon of culture for generations.
Parting Thoughts: Capturing the Essence of Mercado
Tlacolula
Mercado Tlacolula thrives as a symphony of senses—a reminder
that marketplaces retain the soul of a community. Amidst the energy, one finds
the warmth of the spicy Oaxacan sun matched by the vendors' infectious smiles.
Fresh produce, rich textiles, and resonant chatter are textures and sounds
stitching together the tapestry of local life. Week after week, the rhythm
persists—a timeless dance of culture and commerce that beckons travellers to
witness the authentic spirit of Tlacolula.
I will take this market with me for as long as I travel and
hopefully longer. The flavours of the food and the café de olla, the colours
and textures amongst the wears paraded on stall hangings, the scents and aromas
billowing from the natural fragrances and herbs, will all last long after me.
But more importantly, the people and community will continue to thrive and shine
and be a beacon of indigenous chorus’ calling out in the heart of the state of
Oaxaca.
