Is the Future Green or Silver?
Growing up I adored cinema, it gripped me in ways other
media couldn’t. I didn’t have the concentration for books, TV shows were too
short and there was no way I was going to be listening to the radio. Film
created a lasting passion in me because of the endless worlds it created in my mind.
The worldbuilding was second to none. My mum took me to the cinema regularly,
no matter how distracting or energetic I was. I was transported to the Shire of
Lord of the Rings or zoomed to Tatooine in Star Wars. But one world stood out
to me as time went by, one that kept showing up time and time again. The cyberpunk
dystopia…
Cyberpunk for me represented unrelenting skyscrapers packing
the sky like sardines, bright lights shining out into the abyss, flying cars
and unimaginable technology. Through Fifth Element, The Matrix and Akira I was
introduced to these dream defying concepts. A civilisation harnessing the pure
power of technology but wasting it on things and not helping people. Then Ready
Player One released and I found a new perspective on the digital dystopian nightmare.
This was a world where the technology that sent us into the future could send
us deeper into ourselves to discover who we are and who we can be. cyberpunk
wasn’t all doom and gloom.
Alas all the doom and gloom of cyberpunk left a bad taste in
my mouth but an explosion of imagination and creativity in my mind. What if we
could have the incredible technology without the darkness that seems integral
to it. This is where I discovered solarpunk. A greener, more wholistic
alternative to the maddening melee of lights and lasers. There were endless
green fields, solar powered cities and the fresh air flowed through the hills
like a stream. Movies like Black Panther 1 & 2 (that also harness Afrofuturism
concepts) show a world where technology and the earth can play along together
to create a balanced harmony. Where solar panels adorn houses, cars and trains.
Children play in clean streams and water is utilised just enough without waste.
Lands are covered in greenery and glass. A world where the earth is put first
and technology, second.
If you’d like
to know a little more about Afrofuturism I highly recommend Afronauts, a short
film on YouTube that will throw you in to the world much better than I can describe

Thus brings us to Ciudad De Mexico. Welcome to a city where the future collides with the present, where towering skyscrapers cast shadows over ancient buildings, and where technological innovation meets grassroots sustainability. Mexico City, a vibrant metropolis pulsating with energy and contradictions, embodies both the silver screened allure of cyberpunk and the hopeful vision of solarpunk. Join me on a journey through this urban landscape, where cybernetic dreams and eco-friendly aspirations converge in a symphony of contrasts.
Cyberpunk: Neon-Lit Streets and Techno-Dystopias
Step into the neon-lit streets of Mexico City, where the
cybernetic pulse of technology beats in sync with the rhythm of everyday life.
Cyberpunk, with its gritty aesthetics and futuristic imaginings, finds a home
amidst the bustling avenues and digital hubs of this city.
Picture yourself wandering through the labyrinthine alleys
of downtown (Centro), where light display advertisements flicker above crowded
market stalls, and phone augmented relays blend seamlessly with the physical
world. The streets echo with the hum of cars delivering goods, while driver-less
cars navigate the urban jungle with seamless precision.
Mexico City's cyberpunk allure extends beyond its visual aesthetics. It's a city where technology is starting to shape every aspect of life, from smart infrastructure and digital currencies to virtual entertainment and biotech innovations. The city comes alive at night, through speakers ringing out all over the city and the towers bright beacons bursting with light high above the homes and shops crowd the night sky with luminous energy. There is a true synergy with technology and the people, slowly blending where one ends and the other begins.
Solarpunk: Green Oases and Sustainable Visions
Amidst the concrete jungle of Mexico City, a solarpunk
revolution is taking root, weaving a tapestry of sustainable living and
ecological harmony. Solarpunk envisions a future where renewable energy,
community resilience, and environmental stewardship reign supreme, and Mexico
City is embracing this vision with fervor. Where green streets painted with
trees and plants breathe fresh air into the bustling air polluted metropolis.
Where electric buses skate the city streets and waste management has become a
sustainability focus and not just a hygiene initiative.
Imagine strolling through Chapultepec Park, a lush oasis
nestled within the heart of the city. Here, solar panels adorn rooftops,
vertical gardens flourish on skyscrapers, urban farms and gardens provide fresh
produce to local communities. The air is clean, the water is pure, and the
streets teem with cyclists and pedestrians, thanks to robust public transit and
green mobility initiatives.
One of the most eye catching elements of this greener city
focus is the architecture in newer buildings sprouting up. Buildings adorned
with hats of flowers, trees and roots, designed with air ventilation within the
structure removing the necessity for air conditioning and water filtration to
supplement the water supply. They stand out like trees amidst a concrete forest
beckoning the city to join the revolution for a cleaner greener earth.
Mexico City's solarpunk ethos extends beyond its green spaces. It's a city where sustainability is integrated into urban planning, architecture, and everyday lifestyles. Explore neighborhoods like Condesa and Roma, where eco-friendly cafes, zero-waste shops, and community gardens thrive, fostering a culture of mindful consumption and ecological awareness.
The Intersection: Where Dreams and Realities Collide
What makes Mexico City truly captivating is the intersection
of cyberpunk and solarpunk realities, where dreams of a technologically
advanced yet environmentally conscious society coexist with the challenges of
urbanization and inequality. This intersection is where the city's true
character emerges, blending high-tech aspirations with grassroots resilience.
In the shadows of corporate skyscrapers, you'll find
grassroots initiatives harnessing technology for social good. From
blockchain-powered solutions for financial inclusion to community-driven
recycling programs leveraging the peoples solutions, Mexico City's innovation
ecosystem is a testament to the potential for technology to drive positive
change.
At the same time, the city grapples with issues of digital divide, urban sprawl, and environmental degradation, highlighting the complexities of navigating a cyberpunk-solarpunk landscape. It's a city of contrasts, where gleaming tech startups share space with informal settlements, and luxury high-rises overlook the communities they have displaced.
Embracing the Future: A Call to Action
As we immerse ourselves in the realities of Mexico City's possible
future, we're reminded of the power of imagination, innovation, and collective
action. The city serves as a canvas for envisioning diverse possibilities, from
utopian dreams of sustainable abundance to dystopian warnings of technological
overreach.
Yet, amidst the complexities and contradictions, there's a
sense of optimism and resilience that defines Mexico City. It's a city where
dreams are born, where ideas collide, and where the future is shaped by the
collective efforts of its inhabitants.
So let's embrace the future together, weaving a narrative of
hope, creativity, and sustainability. Whether you're drawn to the neon-lit
streets of cyberpunk fantasies or the green oases of solarpunk visions, Mexico
City invites you to be a part of its ever-evolving tapestry of urban life and
imagination. The choice is yours—let's write the next chapter together.
